Meet Board Member Tanya Black

Tanya Black has been working with children as a babysitter and camp counselor since she was a teenager. Tanya also volunteered at the Q House where she assisted children with homework and extracurricular activities. Tanya received an award from the Mayor acknowleding her excellent work as a volunteer. Tanya's love for children inspired her to pursue a career in the childcare field. After high school, Tanya enrolled in Gateway Community College and later obtained an Associate degree in Child Development. In 1993, Tanya begin working with children Birth to the age of 5. Tanya has been working in the childcare field over 22 years. 

 

Tanya is the mother of an amazing 16-year-old young man on the spectrum, Mekhi. Mekhi was diagnosed with Pervasive Development Disorder at the age of 2.  Mekhi is one of many reasons Tanya became involved in support groups offered by Total Joy Are You Autism Foundation. The groups have allowed Tanya to expand her village; as well as provide her with tools to assist with Mekhi's educational, emotional and physical needs. 

 

In her spare time, Tanya enjoys spending time with her fiancé Kyle, Mekhi, family and friends. Tanya also enjoys reading, shopping, taking long walks with her dog, Remi and going to museums. Bob Hearts Abishola, Golden Girls, Jefferson's and The Office are some of the shows Tanya enjoys watching.
